How Padel Tournaments Work: A Spectator and Player Guide

March 28, 20262 min read

Tournament Formats

Padel tournaments typically use a group stage followed by single-elimination brackets. Teams are seeded based on rankings. The group stage ensures every team plays at least 2-3 matches, even if they lose early. This makes tournaments worthwhile for all participants.

Skill Categories

Most amateur tournaments divide players into categories: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and open. This ensures competitive matches throughout the draw. Choose the category that matches your level — playing up is discouraging, and playing down isn't sporting.

Registration

Register early. Popular tournaments fill up fast. Registration is usually through the hosting facility's website or through Playtomic. Entry fees typically range from $30-$75 per team and include court time and usually balls.

Match Format

Tournament matches are typically best of 3 sets with a match tiebreak (first to 10 points with 2-point lead) replacing the third set to keep the schedule on track. Some tournaments use shorter formats like a single set with advantages or golden point deuces.

What to Expect

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled match time. Warm up is usually limited to 5 minutes on court. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and extra overgrips. Expect to be at the venue for several hours — there's often waiting time between matches.

Attending as a Spectator

Most amateur tournaments welcome spectators for free. Glass walls make padel tournaments great for watching. You'll see a range of skill levels and can learn a lot from observing. Bring a chair and sunscreen for outdoor events.
