Padel Doubles Strategy: Positioning and Communication
Move as a Unit
You and your partner should move together like you're connected by a 3-meter rope. This maintains court coverage and eliminates gaps.
Net Position Is King
The team at the net controls the point. Your primary objective should always be to get both players to the net.
The I Formation
Both players at the net, roughly aligned, about 2-3 meters from the net. This is the strongest position in padel.
Communication Essentials
Call every ball. Use simple words: Mine, Yours, Leave it, Switch. Communicate before the point too.
Covering the Middle
The center of the court is the most vulnerable area. The player whose forehand covers the middle should take middle balls.
When to Switch Sides
If your partner is pulled wide, you must cover their side. After the point resets, return to original sides.
Reading Your Opponents
Watch body position before they hit. Open shoulders usually mean crosscourt. Closed shoulders often signal down the line.
