Padel Mixed Doubles: Tips for Playing with Different Skill Levels

March 26, 20262 min read

Mixed Skill Levels Are Normal

In recreational padel, it's common to play with partners of different skill levels. This might be mixed gender, mixed experience, or just different strengths. Making it work requires communication, strategy, and the right attitude.

Court Positioning

The stronger player should typically take the left side (ad court). This puts their forehand in the middle of the court, covering more territory. However, this isn't a hard rule — discuss what works best for your partnership.

Supporting the Weaker Player

If opponents target the less experienced player, the stronger partner should be ready to poach and intercept. Communicate this before the match so both players know the plan. Cover more of the court without making your partner feel excluded.

Adjusting Your Game

If you're the stronger player, resist the urge to take every ball. This alienates your partner and makes you predictable. Play your position and let your partner develop confidence through engagement.

For the Developing Player

Focus on consistency over winners. Keep the ball in play, aim for the center, and work on your positioning. Your job isn't to hit spectacular shots — it's to stay in the point and create opportunities for your team.

Communication Is Key

Talk more, not less. Positive reinforcement between points keeps morale high. Discuss strategy simply and constructively. Never blame a partner for errors — in padel, you win and lose as a team.
