Padel Return of Serve: Strategies to Start Every Point Strong

March 17, 20262 min read

Why the Return Matters

In padel, the serving team has a natural disadvantage because the underhand serve is easier to attack. A strong return puts immediate pressure on the serving team and can help you take the net early.

Positioning

Stand about 1 meter behind the service line. This gives you time to read the serve while staying close enough to move forward after your return. Don't stand too far back — you'll give up net position.

The Chiquita Return

The most effective return in padel is the chiquita — a soft, low shot aimed at the feet of the incoming server. This forces them to volley up, giving you time to advance to the net. Aim for the center of the court to reduce their angles.

The Lob Return

When the server rushes the net aggressively, a deep lob return over their head forces them to retreat. This is especially effective against servers who charge forward before you've even hit the ball.

Reading the Serve

Watch the server's racket angle and body position. A closed racket face usually means slice. An open stance might signal a wide serve. The more you play against different servers, the better you'll read their intentions.

Communication with Your Partner

Before each return point, agree with your partner on the plan. Will you go for a chiquita or lob? Will your partner poach? Clear communication prevents hesitation and improves execution.
