Padel Serving Tips: How to Master the Underhand Serve

The serve in padel might look simple compared to tennis, but a well-executed serve can give you a significant tactical advantage. The best padel servers use placement, spin, and consistency to control the opening of each point.

Basic Serve Rules

You must stand behind the service line with both feet on the ground. The ball must bounce once on your side before you hit it, and contact must be made at or below waist height. The serve must land in the diagonally opposite service box. You get two attempts.

The Grip

Use a continental grip for serving. This neutral grip allows you to add different types of spin without changing your hand position.

Stance and Setup

Stand sideways to the net with your front foot pointing toward the right net post (for right-handed players). Keep your weight on your back foot initially. A consistent setup routine helps develop a reliable serve.

Spin Variations

Flat serve: Hit through the center of the ball for consistency. Best for beginners.

Slice serve: Brush the outside of the ball to make it curve away and stay low after bouncing. The most effective serve in padel.

Kick serve: Brush up the back of the ball for topspin. The ball bounces higher and pushes opponents back.

Tactical Placement

To the body: Forces an awkward return.

Wide: Pulls your opponent off court to create space.

Down the T: Reduces the return angle.

Common Mistakes

Hitting too hard is the most common serve mistake. In padel, accuracy and spin matter far more than speed. Another error is not moving forward after serving. The serve should transition you to the net.

Practice these techniques and your serve will become a genuine tactical weapon. Find a court near you to start working on your serve.
